Scientific paper

An overview is given of the architecture of a future European LEO-GEO interorbit optical satellite communications link based on a diode-pumped Nd:host laser technology. Attention is given to the pointing/acquisition/tracking system and telescopic optics of the compact LEO terminal, and the flexible GEO terminal, which is able to relay channels at both 1.064 and 0.847 micron wavelengths. Current efforts are concentrated on terminal mass reduction to as little as 60 kg.
