The COSMOS survey is a deep wide-field survey centered around an HST Treasury programme, an XMM-Newton large programme as well as Spitzer and Chandra observations. From IRAC near-infrared colours we have selected the two most significant high-redshift (z.gt.1.4) cluster candidates in the field, using the red sequence technique. The first object lies in a corner of the XMM Mosaic, which due to the construction of the X-ray survey has received a rather shallow exposure at large off-axis angles. There is a tantalizing indication of faint X-ray emission in the region of the candidate. The second candidate is more in the center of the field. In order to study the X-ray properties of these unique high-redshift cluster candidates we propose two 100 ksec XMM-Newton observations.
