IN October 1969, the RV Jean Charcot made a geophysical survey of the Horseshoe seamount and abyssal plain west of Gibraltar Straits and south-west of Cape Saint-Vincent, Portugal; this is the eastern end of the Azores-Gibraltar seismic zone1 which is a compressive plate boundary2,3. During this survey a series of deep-sea photographs were obtained near the location of the last major earthquake of February 28, 1969 (magnitude 7.3 to 8.0, location 36.0° N 10.6° W according to the USCGS preliminary report).
