The paper discusses the processes involved in stellar origin and evolution. Attention is given to the gaseous clouds that are regions of star origin (such as the 'stellar nurseries' Barnard 68 within Sagittarius and the giant molecular cloud of molecular gas and dust within Orion), the events preceding the birth of a protostar, and a sequence of events in the process of star formation and evolution. Particular consideration is given to the significance of the occurrence of the intrinsically luminous circumstellar discs bipolar outflows and jets as evidence of a protostar presence and evolution.
