The deceleration of massive nonrelativistic magnetic monopoles in a thermal plasma is calculated. Field freezing causes magnetic field lines to be swept back behind a monopole like a streamer. The results are applied to the deceleration of monopoles in the sun and in the interstellar medium. Monopoles with masses near 10 to the 16th GeV and galactic virial velocities of about 0.001 stop in the sun in a few hundredths of a solar radius, whereas the interstellar medium is essentially transparent to monopoles. Although monopoles may seed the galactic magnetic field, they cannot alone account for the magnetic field observed in the galactic disc; large amplification of the seed is necessary to achieve the observed field strength.
