The decay of low frequency type III bursts cannot be explained by Landau damping at the nonthermal tail of the one-dimensional electron-velocity distribution in the coronal plasma. The abrupt cutoff of burst intensity by Landau damping due to the coronal density gradient is probably prevented by the induced scattering of plasma waves on ions, which creates a plasmon flux in the direction of the increase in plasma density.
