The scenario whereby a false vacuum undergoes a first order phase
transition to a true vacuum in the very early universe is illustrated by
considering the SU(5) and SO(10) unified gauge models. The initial
number density of superheavy magnetic monopoles produced in such a first
order phase transition can be strongly suppressed.
