This paper describes new observations, using the short 9-m electric dipole antenna on the DE-1 spacecraft, of lower hybrid (LH) waves excited by VLF whistler mode waves. Sequential observations on the 9-m dipole antenna and a 200-m dipole antenna show that the long dipole antenna generally had no measurable response to LH waves with wavelengths 26 m or less. It is suggested that most previously reported correlative observations of LH waves and ion conics in the low altitude auroral acceleration region may have been seriously underestimated, since these observations were made with long electric antennas.
