Variation of absorption in the D-region has been studied using riometer data from the years 1970-74 from five stations in Finland at geom. latitudes 57-67 N. The diurnal variation of absorption has one maximum near noon at latitudes below 62 N and two maxima, one in the morning and another at midnight at latitudes above 62 N. A clear seasonal variation can be seen in the diurnal variation at those latitudes where two maxima exist. In the summer and winter the day and night maxima have about the same magnitude but in the equinoxes the day maximum is about twice as great as the night maximum. Differences in the night and day maxima are suggested to be caused partly by changes of recombination rate. Oulu (L = 4.4) is situated at a limiting latitude where the main behaviour of electron density in D-region changes from solar controlled to magnetospherically controlled. In the northern stations (Kevo, Ivalo, Sodankyla, Oulu) riometer absorption correlates much better with magnetic activity than with sunspotnumber.
