Total radio flux density measurements of SS 433 at frequencies from 0.4 to 22 GHz were obtained in May/June 1987 as part of a multi-wavelength observing campaign. During a period of 37 days observations were done daily at many frequencies. We have observed a transition of SS 433 from its quiescent mode to the flaring state, and we study a total of five flares. The first of these events has different characteristics than the others. Older data support the existence of two types of flares. All flares exhibit an excess flux density below 1 GHz. We conclude that complex models are needed, involving the sustained generation of relativistic electrons. As the flare evolves, it is probable that the energy spectrum of the generated particles softens. Our data provide spectral information, to be combined in a later paper with the evolution observed in VLBI imaging.
