A new theoretical model of screening the Coulomb repulsion between reacting nuclei in a metallic medium has been developed and compared with experimental results obtained for the reaction 2H(d, p)3H in a tantalum target. The model, based on the dielectric function approach, allows to test astrophysical pycnoreaction conditions in the laboratory.
