Formulas for cylindrically symmetric solutions of the gravitational field equations in empty space are described. It is shown how twistor techniques can be used to develop cylindrical gravitational waves from their Cauchy data. The results provide insight into the general propagation of gravitational waves, albeit under unrealistic assumptions about symmetry.
