The multitude of resonance modes of a free elastic cylinder are viewed as a host of resonant detectors for gravitational radiation. The absorption cross sections for all modes using exact cylinder eigensolutions are obtained, and detailed numerical results for the axisymmetric longitudinal modes in the Pochhammer-Chree approximation are presented. The combining of information from all modes excited by a gravitational wave pulse to give spectra and directional information about the incident burst is discussed.
