The authors have reviewed the existing data on Cyg X-3 in the different energy ranges as well as the proposed theoretical models, to provide a complete and easily accessed discussion of the nature of the source. They show the properties of Cyg X-3 below 1 keV, i.e. radio, infrared and optical emission, and give an overview of the X-ray (1 - 300 keV) characteristics. High-energy observations are then reviewed. An overview and a discussion on the central engine of the Cyg X-3 system, with an emphasis on the points relevant to the high-energy detections, are then given.
