We propose a 50 ks HETG observation of the soft X-ray halo of Cyg X-1. The 0th order image of Cyg~X-1 will be blocked out (to avoid telemetry saturation). The observation will be scheduled during upper conjunction of the black hole, when pronounced soft X-ray absorption dips occur. Measurements of such flux variability mirrored at different annuli of the halo will place constraints on the distance and extent of the scattering dust cloud, as well as cross-check existing distance determinations for Cyg X-1 itself. The HETG spectrum of Cyg X-1 can be expected to show signatures of the widely unknown focused stellar wind of the O-star that is responsible for the absorption dips.
