The secondary in the X-ray binary Cyg X-1 is interpreted as an accreting neutron star surrounded by a many solar mass disk. The disk has a granular structure but is non-linearly stable. Its lifetime is controlled by dissipative angular momentum transport towards and through the inner Lagrangean point. Its reradiation of the primary's radiation input may explain the peculiar time-varying light curve of the system, both in intensity and polarization. Transitions to the high state occur when the neutron star exceeds a critical spin frequency, of order 1 Hz, which controls accretion. X-ray-bursting is caused by the interaction of the corotating magnetosphere with the inner edge of the disk.
