In the present paper, the resonance interaction between electrons and a packet of VLF waves is studied as a possible mechanism of an observed phenomenon: the pronounced amplitude modulation of an artificially excited quasi-monochromatic VLF signal during its passage along the geomagnetic field. Some characteristics of the nonlinear evolution of a wave packet with a short pulse rise time are identified, with a view toward using these characteristics in the interpretation of experimental data on VLF wave propagation through the magnetosphere.
