The results of a survey of molecular clouds in the J 1-0 transition of HC3N and in the J 9-8 transition of HC5N are presented. HC3N has been detected in two condensations in the Taurus dust cloud complex and HC3N has been detected in MTC2. The distribution of HC3N in TMC2 has been partially mapped. The problem of obtaining total molecular column densities on the basis of these observations is discussed. It is concluded that HC3N and HC5N have comparable abundances in the various Taurus condensations. There is evidence that HC3N and its derivatives are unusually abundant within this complex. Reasons for this and some possible formation schemes are discussed.
