Prolonged (83-sec) laser action has been obtained at a wavelength of 1315 nm by the pumping of gaseous trifluoromethyl iodine along the laser tube by radiation from two low-pressure mercury lamps; 6.5 liters of CF3I at a pressure of 0.82 atm were required to achieve this prolonged action. Experimental results are found to agree well with numerical calculations, and the feasibility of CW photodissociation laser action of even longer duration is discussed.
