A numerical solution of a free boundary value problem is used to construct a current sheet model of a sunspot in magnetohydrostatic equilibrium with its surroundings. The distribution of electric currents in the solar envelope affects the structure of the whole spot. The electric currents determine the configuration of the magnetic field of the spot, in particular on its surface. Since the magnetic field is determined non-locally, a comparison of the modelled magnetic configuration with the observed distribution of the field may be used as a diagnostic for the subphotospheric structure of a spot. The incorporation of volume currents into the the original free boundary problem, the stratification of the gas beneath the photosphere of the umbra, and the consequences of the resulting stratification for energy transport are also discussed.
