In 1993, the Space Shuttle will launch the Cryogenic IR Spectrometers and Telescopes for the Atmosphere, 'CRISTA' experiment, which is to analyze middle-atmosphere dynamical processes over the course of a 9-day mission. CRISTA's high sensitivity will be achieved via telescope and spectrometer cooling to below 15 K by supercritical He. A cryostat design with two He tanks was chosen; the main He tank contains 725 l of supercritical He at 5-10 K and is dedicated to the telescopes and spectrometers, while a secondary tank containing 55 l of subcooled He at 2.5-4.0 K is devoted to cooling for far-IR detectors.
