Cryogenic detectors are being increasingly used for rare event physics such as neutrinoless double beta decay and dark matter WIMP searches. They are also being used in some aspects of neutrino physics. The properties of cryogenic detectors which make them so useful are outlined and the present status of applications to rare event experiments and ideas for new experiments is reviewed.
