Vacuum ultraviolet emissions resulting from electron impact on O2 have been studied at 100, 200, and 300 eV. The ratio of the 83.4 nm and 130.4 nm emissions were used in combination with the recently revised recommendation of the O I (130.4 nm) cross section to determine the O II (83.4 nm) cross sections. The present results are compared with existing measurements and resolve the controversy that has existed regarding the magnitude and shape of the 83.4 nm emission cross section. We recommend an O II (83.4 nm) emission cross section of (1.50 +/- 0.17) × 10-18 cm2 at 100 eV.
