Although plasma may be the most prevalent form of matter in the universe, plasma-based curricula may be one of the most rare phenomena in the universe of introductory physics pedagogy. Few high-school students are ever exposed to the principles or applications of plasma physics, demonstrations or laboratories are almost completely non-existent, and most teachers are not equipped to teach about plasmas beyond the most cursory introduction. Possible reasons for this are legion, but among the most important are: (1) the lack of plasma physics in most teacher's education; (2) plasma equipment can be both expensive and dangerous; (3) typical high-school surveys of physics are crowded, and little room exists for yet another unit on a subfield of physics. The Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy Institute (a two-week summer workshop for high-school teachers) was created in 1998 to address some of these issues. Top high-school teachers from around the country were recruited to perform experiments and design curricula, with a goal toward illuminating already-taught concepts (electricity, magnetism, atomic theory, oscillations and waves, etc.) with ideas from plasma physics. The design of the Institute, some of its participants’ pedagogical projects, and suggestions for future iterations will be presented.
