Meteorite impacts on solid surfaces are discussed in terms of the physics of high speed ballistics, e.g., shock wave propagation and attenuation, explosions, cratering, and partial projectile destruction. Crater depth is examined using one experimental constant, whereby the central compact zone of the meteorite during impact is preserved within the crater. Attention is given to three stages which occur during cratering: penetration, fragmentation and vaporization of the ground material resulting in the impact shock wave, and viscous plastic displacement of material from the crater.
