We report and discuss the ``cracking'' (breaking) of a family of self-gravitating spheres, which results from the appearance of total radial forces of different signs in different regions of the sphere, once the equilibrium configuration has been perturbed. The occurrence of such a ``cracking'' (in the context of the equation of state considered) is induced by either the local anisotropy of the fluid (independently of its origin) or by the emission of incoherent radiation in the streaming out limit. Prospective applications of this effect to some astrophysical scenarios are discussed.
