The capabilities and reach of the first phase of COUPP (the Chicago
Observatory for Underground Particle Physics) are described. During this
first phase of the experiment a 2 kg CF3I bubble chamber
sensitive to WIMPs will be operated at the ~300 m.w.e. of the Minos-near
gallery at FNAL. Prospects for larger devices are briefly discussed.
