It is shown that very marked differences occur between the spread F incidence at two stations (Puerto Rico and Port Stanley) in opposite hemispheres with similar magnetic coordinates and that these differences correspond to differences in the local ionospheres. It is deduced from this that electric field coupling of the local and conjugate ionosphere does not play a dominant role in the build-up or maintenance of the irregularity structure manifesting itself as spread F on ionograms.
