The winter of 2009/2010 was marked by two stratospheric sudden warmings (SSW), a minor SSW occurring in December, 2009 and a second one in January, 2010, which grew into a major SSW event in early February, leading to stratospheric temperatures well above the normal throughout the entire month of February. The onset of the 2010 major SSW in the Northern Hemisphere took place around 22-25 January 2010. The talk presents results from the analysis of correlative observations of temperature from the lower stratosphere to the MLT region (20 to 100 km) from the COSMIC/Formosat-3 and MLS-Aura satellites, ground-based measurements of nightglow optical emissions of OH and O2 (0,1) Atm. band and rotational temperatures, nominally at 87 and 94 km height and ground based ionosonde f0F2 observations at Alma-Ata (43.25oN, 76.92oE). The coupling between the stratosphere/mesosphere and ionosphere during the January 2010 stratospheric warming event is investigated and discussed.
