A major issue in space physics is understanding and quantifying the dynamics of a coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere system. The Naval Research Laboratory is now developing a self-consistent model of the magnetosphere and ionosphere. The two models to be coupled are the LFM magnetosphere model and the SAMI3HL ionosphere model. SAMI3HL is a recently developed high latitude ionosphere model based on the NRL SAMI3 low- to mid-latitude model. SAMI3HL is a fully parallelized 3D ionosphere model that uses a fixed, nonorthogonal grid. The two models will be coupled electrodynamically via the field-aligned currents and the polar cap convection potential. A precipitation model will also be developed to provide a self-consistent ionization source for the high latitude ionosphere model. We will discuss the details of these models, how they will be coupled, and present preliminary results.
