A generalization of the Brans-Dicke (1961) scalar-tensor theory of gravity is outlined which allows the scalar coupling parameter to vary. The resulting homogeneous isotropic pressure-free cosmological models are discussed along with observational constraints on them. Special attention is given to models in which the scalar field varies as some power of the cosmological expansion factor, including a set in which the scalar coupling parameter is negative. It is noted that these models are similar to Newtonian models obtained from an impotence principle.
