The use of the ratio between the cosmogenic nuclides Be-10 and Be-7 as an indicator of the origin, residence times and mixing patterns of different atmospheric air masses is considered. A general expression for the Be-10/Be-7 ratio in an air mass is presented in terms of nuclide injection and production, Be-7 decay, and Be-7 and Be-10 removal by nondecay processes, and it is shown that under stratospheric conditions at equilibrium, the ratio is a slowly increasing function for residence times smaller than the Be-7 half-life of 53.2 days and a rapidly increasing function for longer residence times. Results of Be-10 measurements made by a recently developed accelerator technique for five stratospheric and two South Pole ground-level air filter samples for which Be-7 had previously been measured are presented which demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed technique and its applicability in studies of atmospheric transport processes, particularly the incursion of stratospheric air into the troposphere.
