A discussion is given of the status and potential of studying the time variation of cosmic rays over long timescales by high precision measurements of cosmogenic isotope content in natural archives such as tree rings, polar ice cores, stalagmites, oceanic and sea bottom sediments. Two unexpected and important experimental results will be central points of this paper: first, experimental confirmation of the hypothesis on cosmic ray generation during supernova explosions and secondly, heliomagnetic modulation of cosmic ray flux during the deep solar minimum.
