A survey is given of the present knowledge of the properties of cosmic rays in nearby galaxies through studies of their emission. The queston of the origin of cosmic rays is addressed through relationships between observations at radio and other wavelengths. Intense star-formation appears to be responsible for the active phases of cosmic ray production. This star-formation is induced by galaxy interactions and the effects of galactic bars. Studies of the radio brightness and spectral index distributions across galaxies at a range of inclinations shows that cosmic rays diffuse away from their place of origin in the galactic disk with a lifetime of a few times 107 years.
