Some of the outstanding features of the cosmic ray measurements transmitted from four Mars probes, which were launched in 1973 and either flew by Mars or orbited the planet, are pointed out. The largest increase in the solar cosmic ray flux was recorded on Sept. 7, 1973, indicating the production of particles with energies greater than 500 MeV on the sun. The increase was characterized by negative anisotropy of fluxes of different energies. Analysis led to the conclusion that there are two paths by which particles from a flare in the solar southern hemisphere reach the northern hemisphere of space, suggesting the existence of north-south lobes of the interplanetary magnetic field intersecting the near-equator plasma layer.
