ROSAT has provided a major improvement in observational capabilities for X-ray astronomy. It has performed the first sky survey with imaging telescopes in the X-ray and EUV domains, leading to a quantum jump in a quantitative and qualitative sense. The subsequent program of pointed observations is used by a wide astronomical community to carry out detailed observations with unprecedented sensitivity. In this paper we summarize a few highlights of the early parts of the mission.
