Throughout its history, the Earth was constantly bombarded by interplanetary bodies. Such collisions created the planet and then fed its growth. With time, the rate of such collisions dropped enormously, as most of the loose matter was swept either up or out of the solar system. However, because our planet evolved and acquired an increasingly sophisticated biosphere, the significance of cosmic bombardment has not decreased. In the past, individuals, species, and even entire branches of the evolutionary tree were terminated by cosmic bombardment. A two part system, featuring passive surveillance to identify threats, followed by an active defense to deflect or destroy incoming projectiles is required. A set of automated telescopes to warn of first pass deadly comets and asteroids is also needed. A catalog of the Apollo asteroids, enabling the prediction of collisions with ever smaller asteroids many years in advance is planned.
