Airborne sampling of trace gases in the plume created by the El Chichon volcano has been performed, in order to measure carbonyl sulphide (COS) concentrations in the stratosphere. Samples were taken over a three week period between latitudes 75 deg N and the equator, and at altitudes ranging from 6.1 to 19.2 km. The measurements are considered accurate to within one percent for COS. The data show no enhancement of COS concentrations in the stratosphere above background levels, due to strong vertical mixing. Some of the lowest concentrations of COS were measured in the lower polar stratosphere.
