Using the temperatures from a satellite dataset, the TIMED/SABER L2A dataset of version 1.07, it is observed that the variation of the stratospheric static stability that is closely connected to the quasi-biennial-oscillation (QBO) in the latitudes centered on the Equator with 12 degree half width. The close connection reflects the presence of the secondary meridional circulation that is proposed in the previous studies. The variation of the stability is due to the vertical displacement of the temperature anomalies exhibiting maximum ±4 K that are exclusively associating to the transition of the QBO wind regimes, which is in good agreement to that accounted for by the QBO secondary meridional circulation. The Fast Fourier Synoptic Mapping (FFSM) method is applied with the same data to delineate planetary wave components with the zonal wavenumber spanning over -6 to +6. Here positive (negative) wavenumber is assigned to westward (eastward) propagating waves. Results show that in height range 70-10 hPa, only the eastward propagating waves are significant. Among these waves, wave 1 - 4 are all prominent during the QBO cycle as the zonal winds are Easterlies. Characteristic frequency spectra for wave 1 component show that there are three amplitude peaks at the period of 8, 11 and 20 day, respectively. Meanwhile, shifting to shorter period is seen as wave number increases, for example, the 20-day period spectrum is attenuated substantially for wave 2 and wave 3 components. Moreover, results also show that although with small amplitude, wave 4 and wave 5 with shorter periods of 4-7 days are discernable. Using the spectral estimation results, the wave activity in term of the composite of the PSD estimates is derived. And the results show that the wave activities exhibit clear correlation with the static stability via the QBO secondary meridional circulation. Further details will be presented in the talk.
