Radiative Transfer

Scientific paper

A correlated radiative transfer theory for packed-sphere systems is proposed. Utilizing this theory, the hemispherical transmittances of randomly-packed beds of spheres are calculated under the conditions corresponding to the experiments of Chen and Churchill (1963). It is found that the present transfer calculations, which are based on correlated-scattering theory, provide much better agreement with the Chen-Churchill experiments than previous exact transfer calculations based on uncorrelated-scattering theory, predictions derived from a unit-cell model, and those derived from a ray-tracing method.
