The total tidal force acting on the earth from two or more celestial bodies is conventionally calculated as the sum of forces, where each individual force is calculated for gravitational pair interactions, such as the earth and the moon; the earth and the sun; the earth and Jupiter, etc. The total tidal force from the moon and the sun is obtained by adding the forces from the first two pairs. In the present paper it is shown that this description of the tidal force is insufficiently accurate, since the tidal force from the moon and the sun contains additional terms, one of which is of the order of the force of pair interaction. A general expression for this correction is derived.
