The lidar measurements showed an increase of the aerosol concentration (by more than 50%) at altitudes of 15 - 25 km after the proton ground level event (GLE) on February 16, 1984. This result was quantitatively verified by estimates of aerosol component variations in the stratosphere for GLEs on February 16, 1984 and May 21 - 27, 1990 by using the ion nucleation mechanism. The calculated and experimental values coincide rather well at a certain interval of altitudes.
