Chandra Proposal Id #05200156

Scientific paper

X-ray coronal activity in magnetic white dwarfs is predicted by theory but has not yet been detected. Our objective is to use Chandra for deep exposures of a carefully selected, small sample of single, cool, magnetic white dwarfs. X-ray detection will support the contention that the magnetic fields in some of these ``dead stars'' are in fact dynamic, and not just fossils of their youthful dynamos. Moreover, white dwarf X-rays would provide a perspective on coronal heating under circumstances very different from the solar case. Non-detection will set a stringent limit of at most 1e25 erg/s for the coronal X-ray emission and so set fairly tight limits on the efficiency with which the magnetic fields transport acoustic-wave energy upwards.
