Coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which are vast structures of solar plasma and magnetic field expelled from the Sun into the heliosphere, produce large interplanetary and geomagnetic disturbances. The large geomagnetic storms are mostly caused by fast CMEs and strong shocks. The latest theories of the origin, evolution and driving mechanism of CMEs including their geoeffectiveness for large geomagnetic storms (Dst ≤ -100 nT) in equatorial regions and their association with fast CMEs and strong shocks during the period 1986 - 95 have been studied. It has been found that the maximum number of large geomagnetic storms are associated with fast CMEs and strong shocks. The yearly occurrence of geomagnetic storms, sudden commencement and gradual commencement of storms and their variations with various phases of 11-year sunspot cycle have also been discussed.
