The authors consider cases of simultaneous measurements from satellites and from groundbased stations of the characteristics of narrow subauroral bands of rapid westward drift of ionospheric plasma. They show that this sort of band of rapid drift is due to the development of an intense poleward electric field (⪆100 mV/m) near the projections of the plasmapause. These phenomena have been observed repeatedly during magnetospheric substorms.
