Measurements of thermospheric horizontal neutral winds were made with a Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) in Carmen Alto, Chile (23.1° S, 69.4° W, -10.2° dip), during July-October 1997. During the same period, in Antofagasta, Chile (23.43° S, 70.6° W, -10.29° dip), UHF scintillation and zonal irregularity drifts were obtained using two geostationary satellites. The proximity of these two ground sites, located on the equatorward side of the anomaly crest, provides an opportunity to investigate the role of neutral winds in the formation or suppression of spread-F. The subionospheric intersection of the UHF ray path for the plasma drift measurements is near the upper thermospheric footprints for the zonal neutral wind observations. Analysis of the data sets has been carried out to characterize the scintillation and neutral winds. Scintillations were seen to exhibit spatial variability in addition to monthly and day-to-day variability. The irregularity drifts were eastward, as expected. The drift velocity was higher by about 30 m/s during September/October as compared to July/August. In general, the neutral winds conformed to the flow patterns expected for this region during this period. The zonal wind was eastward for most of the night, ebbing to zero or reversing direction between 0800-1000 UT (LT (hr) = UT - 5 (hr)). It was stronger during the equinoctial months. Some days displayed the "double-humped" feature of zonal winds. The meridional wind exhibited a poleward-equatorward-poleward flow. The reversals progressively occurred sooner, being initially at around 0300 UT and 0800 UT and decreasing to around 0100 UT and 0600 UT, respectively, for October. Zonal wind characteristics during spread-F events (defined by the scintillation monitors) will also be described in this paper.
