We propose to study the role of convection for AGB variability by measuring velocity shifts and line profiles of 1.6 (micron) CO lines formed in AGB photospheres spanning a wide range of temperature and luminosity. While the variations of the large amplitude AGB variables are well understood as the result of stellar pulsation, velocity measurements of irregular and very low amplitude AGB variables are puzzling. Measured photospheric velocities are blue shifted from the center-of-mass velocity. This can be understood if the low amplitude variability results mainly from large scale convection. The survey proposed here will provide enough observational data to confirm this scenario.
