Newcomb's criterion for convective stability in the presence of a horizontal magnetic field is derived as an equation which explicitly shows the effect of vertical variations in the magnetic field strength. For a uniform magnetic field, the equation is reduced to a form which is identical to the Schwarzschild criterion in the absence of a magnetic field, demonstrating that such a field has no effect on the condition for the onset of convective instability. For a nonuniform magnetic field, it is shown that convective instability will result if the magnetic pressure decreases more rapidly than the critical temperature rate.
