Several phenomena caused by heating of the polar ionosphere are examined. It is shown that in addition to steady convection determined by the temperature gradient, a vibrational instability is possible which is associated with an anomalous gradient in the monatomic-gas density arising during intense electron effusions. The amplitude and other parameters are estimated for geomagnetic variations that may result from the development of a convective instability of the ionospheric gas. It is suggested that the obtained results may explain the local nature of certain high-latitude geomagnetic disturbances.
