The paper is concerned with the problem of the formation and long existence of large-scale vortices in the atmospheres of rotating planets. By using the thin atmosphere approximation, the solution of the problem of stationary flow structures inside a spherical layer is investigated in the large. The interpretation of the great Red Spot on Jupiter in terms of the theory of normal eigenfunctions in a rotating atmosphere is discussed.
